Pros

The 2008 Volvo S40 and V50 are more stylish, attractive alternatives to more common small-car models, at only a slightly higher price. Especially notable is the distinctive interior, with its "floating" center-stack design, which brings an airier feel to the instrument panel. Seats are also especially good in these cars. The T5's more powerful engine brings impressive acceleration; factor in Volvo's reputation for safety, and they're a well-rounded value.

Model Highlights

The Volvo S40 sedan and V50 wagon are both offered in two primary models for 2008: the 2.4i and the T5. The 2.4i models get a 2.4L five-cylinder engine making 168 horsepower, matched with a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission. Sporty T5 models get a 227-horsepower, 2.5L turbocharged five-cylinder, offered only with the five-speed auto. Both automatic transmissions have Geartronic manual control. Both models have standard front-wheel drive, but the T5 is available with all-wheel drive as well. The S40 and V50 have a more stylish interior than is typical for small cars, with a memorable pass-through center console and "floating" center stack. Aluminum inlays plus watch-style gauges help distinguish the V50, and Nordic Light Oak trim is available on the 2.4i. Several high-tech features that originally made their debut in Volvo's larger, more expensive models are now offered on the S40 and V50 for the first time this year. The blind spot information system (BLIS), which helps inform the driver when a vehicle is present in the adjacent lane, is now available on all models, and the active bi-xenon headlamp system, which helps increase visibility in dark corners by swiveling the beams to the side, is optional on the T5. The DVD-based navigation system is again offered, but this year there's also new 650-watt, 12-speaker Dynaudio Package. In addition to more power, sportier suspension tuning, and other mechanical changes, as well as fog lamps and appearance extras, the T5 also gets more interior appointments like automatic climate control, upgraded audio, and a power driver's seat. As they're Volvo models, a strong emphasis on safety is expected. Stability control and anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution and emergency brake assistance are standard, as is a whiplash protection system, front side air bags, and side curtain bags. If any of the air bags are deployed, the hazard lights are automatically activated.

Model News

The Volvo S40 sedan and its V50 wagon counterpart get an updated appearance, along with a number of equipment revisions, for 2008. Both models get a redesigned front end, including new headlamps and a larger Volvo logo, a color coordinated rear bumper and moldings, and new bright trim in back. Inside there are larger door pockets, a redesigned center console area, and improved air vents, plus the clock has been repositioned to the audio display. Audio systems have been improved with a standard auxiliary input and MP3 capability. The sporty T5 model gets a bump in performance for 2008; it's now up to 227 horsepower, from 218, but it's no longer offered with a manual transmission. The lineup of wheels has also been revised to help give the models a new look. Standard on both the base 2.4i S40 and V50 are new 16-inch "Cursa" wheels, while a more flamboyant "Ceryx" design is offered on the performance-oriented T5 and new 17-inch designs are available on the V50. Options and option packages have also been completely revised for both models. The blind spot information system (BLIS) that has been offered on Volvo's larger models is now available as an option on the S40 and V50, and a new Dynaudio system is optional. On the V50, Gekko Green is a new color for the palette; Chameleon Blue replaces Brilliant Blue, and Electric Silver has been discontinued.
